About

This programming adapter enables Philips 87C552 (8K) and 87C554 (16K) microcontrollers in 80-pin QFP (SOT318-2) packages to be programmed using 40-pin DIP programmers designed for 87C51Fx-compatible devices.

The adapter translates the QFP device pinout to the standard 87C51Fx 40-pin DIP interface, allowing reliable programming without modifying existing programming hardware. It is intended for engineering, legacy device support, and production programming environments where DIP programmers remain in use.

Modular Adapter Construction

The adapter consists of three modular sub-assemblies that mate via connectors:

• QFP Test Socket Assembly – Accepts the 80-pin QFP device

• Intermediate Header Assembly – Maps the device to the 87C51Fx PLCC pinout

• 40-Pin DIP Base Assembly – Interfaces directly with the programmer

This modular design allows individual sub-assemblies to be replaced if worn, extending service life. Care should be taken during disassembly and reassembly to avoid bending pins and to maintain correct pin-1 alignment.
